Introduction to Algorithmics & Financial Risk Management Tools and Methodologies

Mr. Valery Ollivier graced our campus with his esteemed presence to throw light upon the tools used at Algorithmics and how clients use them for risk mitigation. He is the current regional manager of Algorithmics in the Middle East region, has many years of experience in risk management and risk management solutions, having previously worked for Bloomberg, Murex, Reuters, National Bank of Canada and Bancomer. This experience puts him in a unique position to discuss how risk management tools are applied within the world’s foremost financial solutions.

Algorithmics is the world leader in enterprise risk solutions, dedicated to helping financial institutions understand and manage risk. The lecture broadened our horizons on the type of risks involved in the financial world. He started the lecture with enterprise risk management and spoke about the three types of risks involved namely operational, market and credit.

He spoke about how his 28 year old company which has 800 employees is working to develop and sell softwares to calculate risk. This software helped the Middle Eastern banks like Riyadh and Emirates NBD to realise what went wrong during the 2008 crisis and how they could have averted it. Algorithmics was recently acquired by its biggest competitor IBM.

This session was a real treat especially for those students who wish to specialise in finance and risk management. It proved to be really helpful in giving an in depth understanding of what risks exist in an investment and then handling those risks in a way best suited to your investment objectives.

What Makes a Winner? Exploring the Power of the Subconscious.

“Life’s too short to be able to understand oneself, yet we often end up trying to understand others lifelong”

With this very theme of introspection and understanding the power of subconscious mind, an informative workshop was organized and conducted. Ms. Neeru Singh, our guest speaker, enlightened the student gathering, with a wonderful showcase of experience, highlighting the importance of the subconscious self. She articulated the idea and emphasized the need for people to believe in their abilities, filtering out the conflicting judgmental opinions of others. Involving the audience, a pre-requisite for any successful workshop, was properly taken care by our guest speaker. For instance, a five-minute meditation session was carried out, aimed at helping the audience to identify and visualize their respective fears,
taking control of them and eventually making an attempt to get rid of them.

The guest speaker gave a number of situational as well as experience based examples that constantly kept the audience pondering. She urged the students to know and identify their talents and to trust themselves to excel in them. She reiterated the importance of realizing that although past experiences have a bearing on our fears, our course of action and our level of self-belief. She also stressed about how making the present moment count, is what determined how close or how far we end up from our various objectives.

Ms. Neeru refrained from in-depth discussions on spiritual aspects, but didn’t undermine the role of “soul-level” spirituality. She beautifully summarized the
importance of self-consciousness, in a sentence and I quote “There are a lot of
things you don’t have, because you once believed you can’t have them”. When an
informative speaker meets an inquisitive audience, knowledge tends to flow.
This indeed is the purpose of organizing such workshops, seminars and guest
lectures.

Marketing in HR and attributes of a great salesperson today

Mr. Sanjay Sen, Chief Human Resource Officer of the Dubai Group was invited to speak on the topic ‘marketing in HR and the attributes of a great salesperson today’.

Mr. Sen comes with over 25 years of rich and varied experience in all aspects of the Human Resource function across different industries and geographies. Prior to joining Dubai Group, he was with Citigroup where during his tenure of 12 years, he worked as the HR Head and in Regional Global Talent Development roles across Asia, Europe and USA. He has also worked in Gillette and the Oberoi Hotel Group during his early years. He holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Masters in Human Resources from The Xavier Institute, India.
In his lecture, he mentioned how the Kotler concepts are applied in HR and stating that the organisation needs to prioritize the well being of their internal customers (employees) as they are the gears that keep the machine moving and hence there comes the importance of marketing in HR. From his experience he also shared what he saw were necessary attributes of a successful marketer and how one can learn to develop them. In the end many new ideas sprung from questions put up by students which made the whole lecture an interactive one.

Gender Intelligence – Implications in the Workplace

Mrs. Saundarya Rajesh, the founder – President of AVTAR Career Creators was invited to enlighten us on the topic of Gender Intelligence and its implications in the workplace. Mrs. Saundarya has completed her Masters in Management from the Central University, Pondicherry. A chevening Scholar 2005 from the University of Bradford, she has over 20 years of work experience which began with her tenure at Citibank. She founded AVTAR Career Creators in 2000 and AVTAR I-WIN in 2005.

She started with an introduction of Stereotyping in the workplace. Coming to the main point of discussion i.e. Gender Intelligence, she said it is important to take into view the full picture and not stereotype. She pointed out the fact that there is a difference between gender and sex – While sex is male and female, Gender refers to masculine and feminine.

She engaged the students in a small activity wherein they were to say whether the statements were facts or fiction. The nature of statements made the activity really interesting resulting into a healthy conflict between the girls and boys. Following the activity she discussed Lenses of Conditioning viz. Parental, Societal and Institutional. She also highlighted the effects of Gender Stereotyping on the work environment.

The lecture was concluded with career tips for both men and women on how to manage the opposite gender. The lecture helped all in learning about the importance of Gender Intelligence and the benefits of being “Gender Intelligent”. We were honoured to have Mrs. Saundarya Rajesh amongst us to share her views with us.

ERP applications and qualifications in the market place

Three Guests were invited to speak about ERP applications and the technologies associated with it. The hall was filled with students of all the three types of courses
i.e. MBA, MBA (DCP) and Evening Batch.

The First speaker Mr. Gopal Salim working for Wisdom IT, UAE spoke about ERP essentials. He is a MA Econometrics, MBA in Operations and Marketing, M Phil (Economics) and a Post Graduate Diploma in Supply Chain Management. He carries 30 years of industrial experience in banking, finance and technology industry, 12 years of experience at corporate level in a leading group of company as COO. He also has 31 years of teaching experience in various subjects in management & economics. Further, 10 years of experience in handling corporate training programs for managers and senior executives in the UAE, Oman, Qatar and Bahrain.

Next Mr. Nitin Nayak from Enterprise Business Technologies (EBT), India and UAE gave us an overview of Microsoft ERP (Dynamics NAV). Nitin is a
Chartered Accountant with 14+ years of ERP and Accounting System experience. He has been part of many implementation teams to successfully deliver ERP
Solutions to diverse clients across various Industry segments and geographies.
He has been part of the Microsoft Dynamics world for the last 7 years and brings with him a specialization in the finance.

Manikandan SP who is an IT Project Manager in Emarat, UAE told us about the benefits of ERP. A certified Project Management Professional, holding a Masters degree in Computing and Information systems. He has an overall experience of 14 years in IT, Retail and Training, of which over 10 years have been in ERP projects and project management positions. He has been extensively involved in projects of various sizes and magnitude over these years and is currently working as an IT project manager for a UAE based Petroleum Company.

The important points discussed by the three speakers included ERP(Enterprise
Resource Planning) as a concept, Working of Microsoft Dynamics, Navision, from which Dynamics came into being -originated in Denmark, Implementation with minimal disruption, Modules in dynamics NAV, Benefits of ERP. The speakers shared their own experiences in this field and also made use of great examples to help us relate with the topic. The workshop gave all of us practical details on how a management graduate can further his/her career with ERP solutions.

Prof. Ali Zalzala concluded the lecture by informing us about how to obtain a
Microsoft Certified Professional qualification which would provide added value
to us. All the students found the lecture an enriching experience.

Two weeks “UAE Familiarization Program” is being organized by IMT-Dubai for a group of approximately 30 American MBA students visiting Dubai, in partnership with the Villanova University, USA.

Villanova University is located in Philadelphia, USA and is ranked amongst the top 25 business schools in the USA. This “UAE Familiarization Program” is an yearly event and unique in the series of such initiatives between the University of Villanova and various economic & social organizations in Dubai.

The objective is to acquaint these foreign students with the economic, social and cultural development of the UAE and particularly Dubai. Within this framework, the students will be having a number of academic seminars and will be visiting various key organizations of the region such as Dubai Chamber of Commerce, Dubai Economic Department, JAFZA, and DIFC wherein they will have the opportunity to interact with the concerned officials on various relevant issues.

Now there will be firecrackers bursting in the middle of the night; kids will run around in their new dresses enjoying the variety of sweets and people will dance away all through the night celebrating the victory of good over evil.

IMT- Dubai campus is organising “UJAAS “ to celebrate the festival of lights in a truly Indian fashion but with a twist. A combination that is going to set your feet on fire : Traditional Dandiya with rocking Disco!

Diwali is an auspicious religious festival celebrated by all Indians to commemorate the homecoming of Lord Rama after 14 year-long exile and his victory over the mythological demon Ravana. Devotees decorate their houses with diyas and lights. Dandiya or Dandiya Raas is a traditional Indian dance form that originates from Gujarat It is usually performed during the festival of Navratri. An easy dance form enjoyed by both young and old alike, its full of energy and fun. The special characteristic of the dance is the colorful costume worn by the dancers and the colorful sticks carried by them. Both men and women love to be seen dressed in their best traditional attire. The women wear traditional dresses such as colorful embroidered choli, ghagra and bandhani dupattas glittering with mirror work and heavy jewellery, while men look very attractive in their traditional colorful kedias. The dancers strike the sticks with their partners and dance in circular motion, to the rhythm of the music played in the background. A large number of people are involved in Dandiya Raas and two circles are formed by the dancers. The dance is a very lively, active and fast paced art form, thus leaving no scope for laziness. The dancers spin and move their feet and arms in a choreographed manner to the tune of the music, with lots of drum beats.

We at IMT – Dubai are combining Diwali and the mesmerising Dandiya to have a night filled with joy, energy and lights. Come, be a part of it and lets all celebrate universal victory of good over evil !!

International Business and Trade in Dubai

26^thSeptember 2011, Vikram Shah; a noted businessman and an IMT alumni returned to the Dubai branch of his alma mater after nearly a half year’s time but this time as a speaker rather than a participant in the event. For him most of the faces were different but the enthusiasm and eagerness to learn from the students remained as high as the last time he had been here.

His topic for discussion in the lecture was on how international business and trade works in Dubai and how his rich experience and MBA degree has made him an expert on the topic, both in the theoretical and practical sense. From being an IMT student to marketing in charge (OIB, Muscat) to marketing manager (Girodano) to self made business man (AGT) in a brief span of time is incredible. Yet Vikram does not dent that it is of utmost importance to understand all the ins and outs of the trade.

He began by conducting an interactive session with his audience on Inco terms what they meant; what significance they had when dealing with a client and how by using them several types of miscommunications can be avoided. He then went on to explain about how these terms where used in during the transportation of goods between buyers and sellers particularly if one is using the shipping industry as a means of delivery. Thereafter he reminisced about his own experience of running a business in Dubai, from the early days of the financial boom, post the recession and to the present recovery of the market. On request by the students, he began explaining the various business techniques used by the Dubai government, how they were moving away from the business of oil and now into the business of turning sand in to gold, why the current policies were made and his view on the still potential growth of Dubai.

In the end, after this highly interactive session, both students and ex-student (and now for this brief session -teacher) left having learnt far more than they had expected.

Organisational Behaviour

Mr. Shaheeudheen, Director of Human Resource at Divan Erbil was invited for sharing his knowledge in the HR with the students at IMT Dubai. The audience included students from Dual Country Program and two years full time MBA course, Dubai.

Mr. Shaheeudheen holds a MBA degree from University of Bolton, UK. He has over 10 years of experience in Human Resource (HR) and Talent management with active involvement in various aspects of HR and related functions. Having successfully worked with the hospitality industry across Middle East and Africa, he has been instrumental in driving high performance culture with distinct growth opportunities for its teams. In addition he is also an accredited neuro language practitioner, empowering people to deliver their potentials using their own mind language, behaviour and attitude. He has authored and published a book on the observation of human behaviour namely “Stillness if Silence”. Currently, he is managing the HR pre-opening requirement for a five star hotel as Director of HR & Training in the Kurdistan region of Iraq.

The key points discussed in the lecture were organizational behaviour, influences causing changes in the behaviour, measuring behaviour, value system, emotional intelligence, components to be managed, progressive and transformational behaviour, activities, Maslow’s theory, performance management and talent management. Mr. Shaheeudheen shared his immense knowledge in the field through various interactive examples. He demonstrated how Organisational Behaviour (OB) plays an important role not only in the corporate world but also in any field of our lives. The exhilarating example showing Yanni’s video manifested the role of the OB in the world of music. Mr. Shaheeudheen shared his deep knowledge in the field by sharing an example of the movie K19: The widowmaker. He also suggested the names of veteran authors whose books can be referred so as to have a deep knowledge in the field.

The lecture concluded with Mr. Shaheeudheen clearing the doubts of the students. The lecture was enjoyed by one and all present there, with everyone hoping that there may be more of such knowledgeable lectures in the future.

Institute of Management Technology, Dubai, recently organized a guest lecture on Leadership. Dr. Kamal K. Jain ,faculty OB & HR from IIM Indore was invited to share his knowledge and views on the same. The students of both IMT Dubai Full time M.B.A program and IMT Ghaziabad PGDM (Dual Country Program) attended this lecture.

Dr. Kamal K. Jain has done his doctorate from Agra University, India. He received merit scholarship from the Ministry of Education, UP Government and Agra University for being a meritorious student. Prior to joining IIM Indore, he was working as Professor of Strategic Management/HR with University Tun Abdul Razak, Malaysia. He worked in this university for more than 5 years. He has a teaching experience of more than 32 years and has held various academic and administrative positions. He has taught courses like Management, Organizational Policy and Strategy, Human Resource Management, Managerial Leadership, Collective Bargaining and Negotiation, and Organizational Learning and Knowledge Management. He has supervised 8 Ph. D candidates so far. He is a visiting faculty of some of the universities all round the globe.

The lecture was an interesting session as the problems and roles of a leader were explained with interesting examples in the form of videos and his own past experiences. The reasons of some problems which leaders commonly face and the role played by trust in the organization and the followers were explained. In the session Dr. Kamal K. Jain also focused on what will be the need of the future and how the role and technique of leadership will change. He enlightened the students with his knowledge that how the leaders should always be prepared for the change by which they can make optimum use of the opportunities and gain thefirst mover advantage.

The session was an interactive session where the students shared their views and their doubts were cleared by Dr. Jain. He also invited the students to the campus of IIM, Indore, India and provided his contact details for contacting him in future regarding their doubts. The students enjoyed the session and appreciated the initiative taken by the institute to organize such a valuable session.

VAUDEVILLE’11

Bigger, better and grander as it was expected to be this year, Vaudeville, the annual inter-college fiesta organised by IMT-Dubai and Student hub, DIAC in association with Puranmal, Bank of Baroda, Dare to Compete, Creme 21, Amara, Gulf technical, UAE Exchange, Kaya Skin Clinic, Soy To Chutney and Jenny Flowers on the 8th March, 2011, did reach the celestial point. The dawn to dusk extravaganza comprised of a plethora of events, both academic and cultural.
The astounding footfall of around 600 and 380 participations from 18 universities from all over UAE is evidence big enough for its victory. We are thankful to various participating universities - BITS Pilani – Dubai; Canadian University of Dubai; Murdoch University; American College of Dubai; Heriot Watt; MAHE Manipal; SP Jain Center of Management; London American City College; Winchester; Hult International Business School; Western International School; SZABIST; Wollongong University; BIT RANCHI, RAK; Middle Sex University; Emirates Aviation College; Preston University; Middlesex University – for their cooperation and support.
The academic events kick started the morning with a huge turn up and included events such as Impossible Marketing, Jeopardy, Eclectique and Money Machine which not only tested the wits of the students but made them put their business skills to practice as well. The buzz in the campus was unmatched. The winners of Impossible Marketing were IMT Dubai and BITS Pilani.
IMT Dubai won the trophy for Eclectique and University of Wollongong Dubai was the runners-up. Jeopardy was won by Western College, BIT Ranchi, RAK being the runners-up. The events were appreciated and enjoyed by all the participants and the audience owing to their thought provoking structures.
In the afternoon, “FraGgeD” a LAN Gaming event was held which brought together all the gaming enthusiasts, competing for top honours in the games of Counter-Strike which was won by Heriot Watt and Age of Empires, won by IMT Dubai.
The heart throbbing cultural events commenced in the evening with the lighting of the auspicious lamp which was graced by the presence of Mr. Ibrahim Jamel, Director of Operations Education Cluster TECOM who was the Chief Guest; Dr. Farhad Rad-Serecht , Director , IMT Dubai; Mr. Ashok Gupta, CEO, Bank of Baroda,the guest of Honour; Padmashree Smt. Geeta Mahalik, Padma Shri & Sangeet Natak Academy awardee and Dr. Abhilasha, Head of Office of Student Services, IMT Dubai. The lamp lighting was followed by vandana presented by Dhanashree Warrior through her graceful Bharat Natyam moves.
The crowd in the amphitheatre was fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of Smt. Geeta Mahalik’s performing art which was followed by various inter collegiate competitions. Sound of Music, the singing competition was won by BIT Ranchi, RAK. Talent Station, which grabbed a lot of appreciation, was won by BIT Ranchi, RAK again and so was Dance O’ Mania. Mahe Manipal bagged the runners up trophy for dance. Cest’ La Mode saw the sizzling Guys & Girls from IMT Dubai walking the ramp with their ‘to die for’ attitude. Loop De Ville, war of the DJs, which was the USP event of Vaudeville’11 was won by DJ Nitesh of the university of Wollongong Dubai. Apart from the competitions, the food stalls were a hit amongst the students.
There was close competition in almost all the events, hence making judging the toughest job of the day. However, with their outstanding performance in all the events and five trophies in their kitty, BITS-Ranchi, were adjudged the overall winners of the day.

It feels great to declare Vaudeville’11 a huge success after all the running around and constraints that were confronted during the various phases started from planning. Apart from the pride that we IMTians take in being able to organize something at this level, we aspire to grow every year with new ideas and unrelenting hard work.

Freshers' Party

The Freshers' Week came to an end on a grand note with the Freshers’ party that was organised for the 2010 batch by the seniors. The senior batches worked hard at organizing and activating participation from all students alike. The event started with seniors, Neha Mathur and Pranay Sachdev, welcoming the IMTians to a night of fun and entertainment. The first item for the night was a classical dance by Krieselle Joelle D’Lima. This was then followed by some very good dance moves by Dimpy Kachhia and teammates to some western numbers. Pranay Sachdev, then enthralled the audience with an old foot tapping number that made the students yell out for an ‘encore’ at the end. To set a bit of change in the mood, Abhinav Chauhan, then, mesmerised the audience with some Shero Shayiri . This was then followed by a hip-hop dance by Saurabh Mishra who managed to dance his way into the hearts of the audience. The night also saw a game played by the juniors that saw 5 young men try their best to wear a sari within 1 minute. This was then followed by a melodious rendition by Kashima Gupta. The night then witnessed a brilliant mime skit by the junior boys and girls. The skit which was based on the theme of ‘police and thief’ was able to keep the audience in fits of laughter. The batch of 2010 yet again enthralled the audience when they set the stage on fire by dancing to some popular numbers. The last event of the day was the Mr. and Ms. Fresher competition. The competition consisted of two rounds, the first being talent round and the second, a question round. Harsh Thaker and Krieselle Joelle D’Lima were rightly awarded the titles for their outstanding performance while the titles for Mr and Ms Talented went to Shashawat Bhanti and Apoorva Dumra respectively. The event finally drew to a close with Dr. Abhilasha's vote of thanks where she thanked the various committees for the great efforts they put in to make this entire event a grand success. The prizes for the various sports events that were held over the week were then distributed and the overall trophy was handed over to the Batch of 2009 for emerging as the winners of the FOB competitions.

FOB: Football Finals

Fresh of the Boat, IMT Dubai’s annual sporting tournament, came to an end with the highly anticipated football match between the boys of the 2009 and 2010 batch. The energy in the air was evident by the presence of the crowd at the sidelines all set to cheer their teams. The two teams lined up by 17.40. The juniors won the toss and got to choose their side of the field. At 17.50, the match kicked off. Within the first five minutes itself, Arjun Rajashekaran from the seniors’ team managed to score the first goal of the day. The adrenaline levels were hence definitely high for both the players and the supporters right from the beginning as the juniors now had to try their best to par with their seniors while at the same time, the seniors had to make sure they continued to be ahead of the juniors. During the first half, the juniors tried their level best to score a goal of their own, but were however prevented from doing so by some pretty good defensive skills the seniors exercised. The seniors too tried their luck at scoring few more goals but were stopped from doing so by some superb saves by the juniors’ goalie. The 1st half of the game came to an end with the score of 1-0, in favour of the seniors. The second half too witnessed an action packed game, where the energy of both teams was commendable. The second half of the game also saw a player of the senior team receiving a yellow card from referee Sagar Suri. With just ten minutes for the game to end, Christopher D’Mello managed to score the second and third goal for the seniors, thus putting the seniors in a very comfortable position as the juniors had very little time to recover. The match thus ended on an exhilarating note, with the batch of 2009 undisputedly declared the champions, having a score of 3-0. A special mention must be given to the spirit and attitude of the 2010 batch during and after the game as they exhibited true sportsman spirit and fought till the end. The match ended on a friendly note, and the spirit of the sport was kept alive!

FOB: Seniors Vs. Juniors Girls volleyball Tournament

The Fresh of the Boat event, which opened with a bang on Saturday, was carried forward with the first event for girls, a game of Throw ball. With the backdrop of the setting sun, foreground of spirit and fun, and with the aim to have pure fun, the girls’ Junior and Senior teams, took to the courts for the match. The girls showed a lot of enthusiasm for the sport and the eagerness to play was almost tangible in the air.

The Sports Committee organise FOB on an annual basis, to welcome the Freshers into the IMT way of life, through the Sports. The building of team spirit, motivation and pure frolicking fun!

The evening began with encouraging and inspiring speeches from Dr. Abhilasha and Dr. Agarwal. Their words highlighted the importance of team spirit and sportsmanship, complimented the organisation of the event and elaborated on the significance of FOB.
The girls played 2 sets of the game. The first set was quick, and very much in the favour of the Senior team. The back and forth of the ball grabbed apt attention of the spectators. Although there was not much crowd for the event, the support and cheering was no less. In the second set, the Junior team caught up and performed extremely well.

The Senior girls won the match, 11-3, 11-8 at the end. The spirit of teamwork prevailed throughout the game, and the overall evening was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone present.

FOB :Seniors Vs Juniors, Faculty Vs. Juniors

The Final year students of Institute of Management Technology, Dubai took on the First year students in the finals of the Fresher’s Off Boat Champions League today. It was a breath taking match. Both the teams performed well. However, the first year team led by Harsh Thaker outplayed the second years led by Amit Kumar by 10 runs.
The first year team had an all win record in the tournament and were clearly a strong team to play against. Similarly, the opponent was equally strong and had earlier beaten their counterparts in the qualifying round. The senior students won the toss and elected to bowl. The first years batted first and compiled a competitive, yet an excellent total of 68 runs. The match was a 12 over match and the opening bowler from the first year was Ankit Bharadwaj who bowled for 4 overs and took 3 wickets. From the second year, the opening batsman was Shishir Roy.
The initial Bowling team (Second year) gave 17 extras – 15 Wide and 2 No Balls while the first year we re slightly contolled with theirextra s and gave onlt 10 wides and 1 no ball. There were a few sixes and fours hit by Ishank Mahajan, Tarik, Anuj Verma, Shashwat Bhanti and Siddharth Verma.

Till the first three overs, the defending team (second year) scored 9 runs for 3 wickets, and the match was in favor of the 1st years. However, Siddharth Verma brought the match back in favor of the senior team and displayed a bleak form of hope. This placed the juniors under tremendous amount of pressure. However, the winning team came back strong and restricted the runs till the last over.
The day also witnessed an astounding match between the IMT faculty and the first year students. Although, the faculty put up a great game show, the students of the first year, led by Shivankit, won the event. The occasion was honoured by the batsmen ship of the Dean of IMT Dubai, Dr. The faculty scored a grand total of 44 runs in 12 overs. The team was led by Dr. Sujit, who scored 25 runs in the match. The students scored a total of 55 runs in 7 overs and led the team to victory. Niranjan Balaji (scored 23 runs) and John Michael (scored 26 runs) played brilliantly while the star of the day was Ishank Mahajan with 3 wickets in just 2 overs.

FOB: Tug of War: Seniors Vs. Juniors

The Fresh of the boat week showed true enthusiasm which was long awaited in the boys & girl’s tug of war. The junior girls took positions on the left and the senior’s on the right. The match referee blew the whistle after a final inspection and the action started. The single set match went in favor of the junior’s in the beginning and the girl’s were seen giving their best showing enormous energy levels. The seniors stepped up and with a heavy jerk (which seemed like a team strategy) the juniors came tumbling down and crossed the line. This ended the match which was short lived but exciting.

Next came the turn of the big boys vs. the juniors. There was an air of excitement that surrounded the plush green lawns. The boys geared up and took their positions and everything was all set. The best of three match begun with a tremendous jolt from the juniors which gave them the early advantage. The first set went on for around 2-3 minutes which involved a real show of raw power from both the teams. The struggle ended with the juniors having their way and pulling the seniors over the line with fierce strength. Both teams were exhausted and there was a break of approx. 5 minutes and the next set kicked off. The juniors had an advantage now but the seniors put up an incredible show and gave no chance to the juniors in the second set, which didn’t last a very long time. It came all down to the final battle and both the teams gathered their might. It was the longest set of the match and it seemed like the players were now fighting for respect. The seniors took advantage and the juniors almost crossed the half line, but a sudden thrust of energy and there was a sudden change of picture. The seniors were seen struggling and it took a final pull and the match ended. There was a roar in the air as emotions came bursting out. All in all it was a well fought battle and at the end of the day there were no losers or winners. Like true sportsmen, both the team members shook hands with much respect and celebrations galored.

FOB Volleyball Prelims

After the kick-start given to FOB by the cricket prelims (boys) in the morning, it was now time for the guys to play across the net. The lush grass of the lawn surrounded by the desert around the campus, came alive at 5:00 PM on the Saturday evening with the enthusiastic junior boys hitting the gound first.

Team A (Juniors), winning the first two straight sets (11-9, 11-2), qualified for the finals to be held on the 18th of this month. Harsh Thakar, Shashwat Bhanti and Ankit Bhardwaj of the winning team showed commendable performance and managed knitting the team together. Team B played tough with Ishank Mahajan and Anuj Verma putting in great efforts.

This was followed by an enchanting senior boys’ prelims match which engrossed the spectators no less than what a final match would. Both teams gave tough competition to each other which was proved by the three long sets that were played – third being the longest with 8 all to make the game stretch to a game of 13. Set 1 was won by Team-A (11-9), with Tarun Baijanath, Shivang Kapoor and Anirudh Lal showcasing their best. Great resilience shown by Team-B in the second and the third set winning, both (11-6, 13-10) with an awesome performance by Akhil and his team.

FOB Girls Cricket

Girls of IMT-Dubai proved their mettle by displaying a powerful performance in a cricket match that took place today at 5:00 PM on the campus ground. Junior girls’ team won the toss and decided to ball first. It was a 6 over match with boundaries redefined. Shweta Katurwar and Swati Tewitiya were the opening batsmen of the senior’s team. The senior team set a target of 54 for the junior team with 2 wickets fallen. Dimpi Kachhia and Swati Tewatiya showed a wonderful partnership, hitting a series of 4’s and 6’s.

The cheerful junior’s team hit the ground with Apoorva Dumra and Aditi Agarwal being the opening batsmen but could only make 41 runs for 6 wickets. Though the junior’s team lost there was a commendable performance shown by Sonia Sehgal, who alone made 25 runs.
The umpires of the match were Nakul Sharma and Harsh Thaker. The cheering from the respective classmates of both the batches was encouraging enough to motivate the girls to play their best and more than that they seemed to enjoy themselves thoroughly.

19/10/10:Phase one of the annual “Marketing On Fire” conference kicked off at IMT Dubai and on a fine note. “Marketing on Fire” is an IMT Dubai initiative that gives its students, the opportunity to interact with the corporate world, present ideas of their own to the invited dignitaries and receive appropriate feedback for the same.
Despite facing immense pressure of balancing both their working life and their college routine, this phase of the conference was enthusiastically initiated and organised by the 2nd year evening batch students of IMT Dubai, under the guidance of their esteemed marketing professor, Dr Mohan Lal Agarwal.

The focal point of the seminar was “Strategizing the Transition from Procurement to E-Procurement.” The main crux of the forum was E- Procurement and its application in today’s world, the challenges faced by the procurement industry and finally the solution to the problem “e-procurement “

The presenters were Shadaab Ahmed, Shadab Anwar, Mayur Khanna, Yogesh Badlani, Jenny Tahilian and Reema Badlani, each bringing with them a glorious mix of corporate experience and the knowledge they had so far received from their tenure at IMT.
They began their presentation by defining what E procurement is, its role so far in the U.A.E, the transitional returns, the barriers faced and finally the benefits provided by transitioning an existing system from procurement to e-procurement.
After the presentation, the dignitaries, Bhanu Pratap Singh (Atlantis, Director of Procurement), Mr. Ganesh Kumar (Manager, Procurement, Atlantis), Mr. B Mohan Kumar (General Manager, JAAS Electromechanical LLC) and Mr. Mohammad Husain Vora (Sales Engineer, Aqua Gas Group) each gave their own valuable insight into the topic based on their vast experience and presented a few questions of their own to the presenters, which in turn were suitably answered by them. Once this was done, the floor was open to the rest of the student body, to clarify any remaining doubts they may have had on the subject.

IMT Dubai has always placed high value in providing quality education and quality opportunities to its students. Students’ development in both theoretical and the practical aspects of an application is given highest priority, so that they implement it both during their student life and further along in their career.

Fresh Off the Boat! Day 2: Seniors Vs. Juniors - Volleyball Finals

17th October, 2010. The second day of the Fresh Off the Boat, IMT Dubai’s annual sporting tournament, ended with the highly anticipated Seniors Vs. Juniors Volleyball Finals.

As the floodlights lit up, the player’s entered the field all geared up for the game. It was expected to be a close match as both the juniors & seniors were experienced players, all geared up for the game. Despite, the lateness of the hour, a huge crowd turned up, hollering their support for their respective teams .The game started out with a good note for the seniors scoring their first point. The juniors chased them right till the end, but, were unfortunately unable to hold onto the game as the seniors won the game by a close, nail biting 20-19.

The juniors were able to gain a little momentum going early in the second set as they scored their first point, but, couldn’t keep up the intensity up and soon tumbled. The score card showed a staggering 13-6 before the time out session. The time out didn’t help them much as, by then, the juniors had lost most of their energy. The game ended with the seniors winning the set and the game with a score of 20-10.
The crowd applauded their sportsmanship and the commendable performance that the two teams showed. It was a thorough entertainment right till the end.

Mr. Kishore Bhatia, the Marketing Support Manager of Federal Foodss is an authority in the FMCG business with 10 years of experience. His specialty: marketing strategies, customer relationship, and profit responsibility within the FMCG industry. Federal Foodss, one of the largest FMCG distribution centers in UAE has more than 30 reputed brands under its belt including Sadia, Daawat, and Marina etc. He delivered an excellent presentation where his focus was to practically apply the theoretical marketing concepts into an FMCG industry.
“FMCG is not a glamorous industry but a recession proof industry” he states.

He highlighted the advantages of being in an FMCG industry which apart from being resistant to recession is a huge market with many categories. This industry he says has a quick turnover & relatively low cost associated with it. He went on to explain the FMCG boom in Dubai and how taking advantage of the huge market in UAE Carrefour established them as the leading FMCG here. He outlined the basic concepts of marketing and their practical applications in an FMCG industry.
While elaborating various marketing strategies,he stated that it is very important to select a category, define the segment, zero down to one sub segment and define the risk.

In conclusion, he stated that equal emphasis must be laid on both sales and marketing clarifying that neither can exist without the other. As the session came to an end, he advised the students by highlighting the 6Ps of a successful marketing manager: professionalism, problem solver, passionate, and persuasiveness
The interactive session was equally insightful with the students enthusiastically came forward with questions. The students of IMT D, has surely benefitted immensely from the vast bounty of knowledge they received regarding the functioning and marketing strategies of FMCG industries.

Fresh Off the Boat! Juniors Vs. Juniors - Cricket Match

16th October, 2010.It was a beautiful Saturday morning and the FOB (Fresh of The Boat) week, organized by IMT, Dubai kicked off. The freshers were welcomed with the first extracurricular event – A cricket match between the two teams from the fall September 2010 batch. The venue was the IMT parking lot and the match was scheduled to start at 0700 Hours sharp.

The two teams assembled at the venue at 0630 Hours and all the prior arrangements had been done courtesy the Sports Committee. As the clock stuck 6:45, the two team captains Harsh Thaker and Shivankit Kumar were called onto the pitch by the two umpires Nakul Sharma and Sankalp Khanna. There was a flip of the coin and Shivankit Kumar won the toss and elected to bowl first. The match kicked off and Harsh Khanna and Vrishodhan Jhawar came out to open the innings facing Niaz Nain Ahmed with the bowl in his hand. Both the openers showed some defensive skills to begin with and there was a slow start to the game.

Out of the total 10 overs allotted for each side, the score stood at 31 runs for the loss of two wickets at the end of five overs. The bowling side showed some superior skills and the batsmen were evidently facing pressure. The batting team decided to gather some pace and was more or less successful at doing so, ending their allotted ten overs with a target of 61 to be chased by the other team. There was an interval of 10 minutes as the players were seen strategizing under the scorching sun now starting to take its toll on the players.

Team 2 came out to bat with its openers Rahul Mahanta and Sumeet Panda. Ankit Bharadwaj opened the bowling attack with a superb first over conceding only one run of it. Saurabh Mishra and Anjum Goyal decided to take charge and displayed some extravagant batting skills with some undisciplined bowling show from team 2.

The match entered the final over and team 2 required 19 runs to win, which seemed a daunting task. The first ball was hit for the longest six of the match by Team 1 instantly showed signs of pressure.

There were celebrations all around and signs of disappointment on faces of the players of Team 2. It was a well fought battle and the players shook hands and admitted the match could’ve gone in any Team’s favor. The atmosphere at the area was over whelming as both the teams showed true sportsmen spirit and finally shook hands with the two umpires. All the players were then taken inside the cafeteria and offered much needed refreshments courtesy IMT which was a big relief.

ICTBM-10 at IMT-Dubai

The International Conference on Technology, Business and Management (ICTBM), held in the Institute of Management Technology, Dubai kick-started with the inaugural ceremony on the 16th. The three day conference was held from the 16th-18th March 2010.
The ICTBM is supported by AIMS which was established to unify Indian management scholars to foster excellence in education and research and to support practices in all business related disciplines.
The conference hosted around 81 delegates from India, Indonesia, Iran, Italy, Libya, Oman, Portugal, Taiwan, the U.A.E, Ukraine,the U.K, and the U.S. There were 436 papers given for consideration, out of which 86 papers are to be published in the ICTBM bulletin.
Among the congregation were present many eminent faces of the U.A.E, including the ICTBM Chief Guest Dr. Ayoub Kazim, Executive Director DIAC and Dubai Knowledge Village and Prof Lawrence Loh, Vice President of Academic Affairs, Al Ghurair University –Dubai .
The three day affair included sessions on various aspects of Technology, Business, Management, Finance, Innovation, IT Industry, Human Resource Management, and Marketing.

A special plenary session was held on 17th March where subject matter experts, Prof. Sohail Chaudhary, Department of Management and Operations/International Business, Villanova University, USA and Dr. Subhash Datta, Director, Jaipuria Institute of Management, India shared their expertise on “Perspective on Distance Learning Approaches in a Business School Environment” and “OR Models for Sustainable Development” respectively.
“ All the insights and experience conveyed by the brilliant minds present here at ICTBM-10 have broadened the horizons of everyone’s learning" ,said Dr. Abhilash Singh, the Conference Co-Chair.

Volley Ball Tournament

The volley ball matches that have been running for the past couple of days culminated in a highly anticipated final match held between II year Marketing and Finance students. The much awaited match opened to clear skies and an overwhelming crowd at the IMT-D grounds this evening. Red and black colour shirts donned by the Marketing and Finance teams respectively, added to the unbridled excitement.

The match kick-started with the Finance team winning the first of the four sets. The Marketing team backfired by winning the second set but the Finance team countered their score with a win in the third set.
The turning point of the game was the final set that saw the Marketing team battling it out on the field, in the hope of levelling the scores. But a brilliant performance by the Finance team ensured that victory was on their hands.

Nikhil Tyagi, Rohan Popli and Arpit were some of the key players who propelled their team to a successful win. The Marketing team put up a praise-worthy performance and players Deepak Nagar and Nishant Chaudhary deserves a special mention.

“People never fail Organizations, Organizations fail people!” says Seema Hallon, the Regional Manager of Dun and Bradstreet for Southeast Asia and MENA region.

On the 9th of February, Ms. Seema Hallon, visited the campus for a second time and delivered a powerful discourse to the students of IMT-D.

The session highlighted the importance of an HR department in an organization. The HR department analyses and evaluates key performance indicators, identifies the key customers, the business model and the business’s investment plans before making the policies and implementing them.An HR department does not coordinate, they facilitate effective decision making. HR professionals are not line managers; they are the strategic partners of a business who help develop policies that are relevant to the current situation.

The HR department also functions as an employee champion. Creation of policies that are beneficial both to the employee and the organization is no easy task. When an employee is happy in the organization, they perform. For, performance is nothing but the sum of knowledge, skill and attitude of an individual.

Last but not the least; she encouraged the students to take an introspective journey so that they can face the challenges that occur during recessionary times.

"The fastest survive!" People who believe this haven't heard Mr. Partho Bhattacharya's discourse. For, the Director of Human Resources of Better Homes strongly believes, that in the world of Human Resource Management, the fittest survive. Better Homes has been the leading real estate agency in Abu Dhabi and Dubai for over 23 years with over 40 percent market share and a workforce of over 500 employees. And therefore, on the 2nd February 2010, IMT-D was infinitely fortunate to have his esteemed presence in the campus.

Mr. Bhattacharya in his presentation emphasized on being an all round HR professional. "An all rounder ", he says should have experience in all subsystems of HR. Then only does one truly become an HR Manager."

He discussed with the audience the importance of HR in an organization, how it contributes to the business strategic management and helps in putting the right people on the right job. He described HR to be the direct link between success of the organization and the quality of people management.

The HR process he said constitutes of manpower planning, requirements and selection, performance management, training and development; and employee compensation and benefits management so that it added value to its firm and its employees.

He affirmed that as a result of recession, most real estate brokerage firms have had to close shop because they were not able to maintain their overheads relative to low sales volume and high liabilities. He discussed this through an interactive case study where he pointed to his audience the difference between downsizing and rightsizing. He recommends rightsizing because it singles out those employees who are performers and will keep on performing well even during hard times for the company; retains them and develops them to grow in the organization.

Before he concluded, he pointed out that it took more than a professional degree to be an HR manager. One had to be a peoples' person; have sound communication skills and knowledge of HRIS. One should also be able address diverse groups but most of all one should have a strong emotional constituency to deal with employee grievances and layoffs.

A company is strong and sharp when their workforce is able to meet the demands of the organization's targets and perform accordingly to achieve them.

Writing to Win: Getting it Right!!

“Don’t wait for it to be perfect! Get it right, fit for purpose! Because there‘s no perfect!”, says Dr. David Reay.

Students throughout their academic career and beyond indulge in academic writing whether they like it or not. More than often, students prefer not to indulge themselves in such laborious tasks.

IMT-D was honored to have the esteemed presence of Dr. David Reay, the Managing Director of Gibson Consulting based in Knowledge Village. He delivered a most interesting session, highlighting why proficiency in academic writing is essential not only in everyday life but also in business and the workplace. The audience for the workshop was not limited to the students and faculty of IMTD, but to a diverse crowd of academics and researchers who were very well aware of the benefits to be gained from the knowledge that Dr. Reay had in abundance to share. His vast experience in academia before entering the world of business world he as a research fellow and faculty member at universities in the UK and the USA has profoundly influenced him to deliver these words of advice for the betterment of the students, and their efforts. His vast experience in publishing his own research and major research projects in USA and the UK makes this session with him all the more invaluable.

He stated that what any organization seeks foremost in a suitable candidate for employment is the ability to devise solutions. Not just any solution, but those based on sound research and strong arguments. Devising feasible solutions is more than vital for writing proposals, reports, and recommendations; implementing change, and for strategic mapping. Dr. Reay says that in order to develop this particular higher order skill, one has to put in a lot of rigour.

A lot of people, he affirmed, are not able to express their research while keeping in mind the bare essentials and requisites. What they or any other person needs is a tool to help them. One such tool is the Ethos 6 Steps. The first step is to PREPARE core arguments for the report on the basis of the known outcomes. Then GATHER all available resources, and SELECT relevant and accurate facts.

The secret to differentiating relevant data from the irrelevant is to perfect the art of skim -reading. “Read the first paragraph, the conclusion, and the first line of all other paragraphs. By the time you reach the second page you’ll know if it’s right or wrong”, he declared. The next step would be PRESENT one’s point of view SUPPORTed by relevant arguments. Last but not the least is to FINALIZE and edit the entire document. These six steps are the core steps in preparing any kind of academic writing, making connections between facts and matching information to make valid arguments.

He advised the audience to adhere to the specifications, and the writing style required by the party to whom the academic writing is to be submitted. However if the recipient doesn't mention any, he recommended that one should use APA style manual for he believes it to be more user friendly and straightforward in comparison to the MLA style manual. Dr. Reay at the end of his interactive discourse was showered with questions. The audience’s sharp intellect and enthusiasm demonstrated the rising learning curve of IMT-D’s students. The IMT-D students have once again proven themselves pioneers of self improvement and agents of change to driving themselves to get things done right and even possibly perfect!!

61st Indian Republic Day Celebrated

It’s really quite heart warming to celebrate The Republic Day of India, away from the country, with such fervour and enthusiasm! Even before the day, there was excitement in the IMT air, at the thought of dressing up in traditional wear and having a college event for the day.
At IMT-D, the day of the 61st Republic Day of India started with people dressing up in saris and kurtas, flaunting little Indian flag tags, wearing colours of the flag. The vibrant colours, the inexplicable feeling of pride and patriotism and the goose-bumps after seeing the shots of the Republic Day Parade on the news, all of it contributed to the appropriate atmosphere for the occasion. Everywhere on campus, even the talk was about the significance of the day and more specifically about how IMTians were going to celebrate.
The Sports Committee, for the occasion of 26th January, organised a football match, between Seniors and Juniors. The usual excitement of the match just added to the thrill, which already reverberated in the air! The event started in the evening around five, when the students all gathered in the courtyard lawn for the Indian National Anthem. There was a brief introduction given about the Republic Day, what is the significance of the day, about the parade and about the feeling of patriotism. Then the Dean, Dr. Seth, was invited to say a few words on the occasion. His words were inspiring and his story about the American resident who refused to give up his Indian passport after 30 years of living in the U.S was interesting and thought-provoking.
After the introduction and the speeches, the students were all invited for the National Anthem. The tune seeped through the campus and straight into the hearts of all the students and faculty standing in the field. Everyone stood together, to sing the anthem, and the feeling of that moment is too wonderful to be expressed with words.

After the National Anthem, the friendly football match commenced, with the Senior and the Junior teams pepped up to perform their very best. The Junior team sported the colour red, while the seniors wore the colour blue, and made for a visually enriching experience. The colours though, were just a very small part of the enrichment, the real entertainment being the game and skill of the sportsmen. Both the teams performed their very best, with each moment of the match as exciting as the next. The final score was 1-1, with the captain of the Junior team, Arjun Rajasekaran scoring the first goal, and the second goal scored by Akshat Trivedi from the senior side. The match ran neck-to-neck from beginning to end and overall made for a very exciting hour!
The highlight of the day, it can be said, was the enthusiasm that people showed in dressing up, in cheering for the teams, the fun which came with taking pictures and the true feeling of patriotism, which sizzled through everyone. The Republic Day of India, celebrated the IMT way, was surely a day to remember!

NIKAI's Vaudeville:A Grand Success

The much awaited inter college event hosted by IMT Dubai was formally inaugurated by the Dean, Dr. Seth. He welcomed the guests from NIKAI group and the teams from six colleges of across from Dubai who participated in this event. Event began with the debate competition “Convince Me!” which was started by students of BITS Pilani Dubai followed by the teams from S.P. Jain, Middlesex and IMTD. These participants shared their valuable thoughts about “Discovery of Water on the Moon-Boon or Bane for Human Civilization” and defended their views against the questions raised by the audience. The team From BITS Pilani Dubai won the hearts of everyone and stood first followed by Middlesex as the runners up and S.P. Jain at the2nd and 3rd positions respectively.
Another highlight of the event was Electica (Presentation) where four teams from BITS Pilani, S.P. Jain and IMT shared their market researches and views about the Reliability and dependability of NIKAI products .the event was judged by Mr. Bapat, and Mr. Abhilash from NIKAI group who were the platinum sorcerers for the Vaudeville. The centre of attraction of the event was IMT team who presented live research examples and supported their facts with figures and surveys and proved themselves, with them was the team of S.P. Jain in a neck to neck competition but managed to walk away with the winning trophy.
Then came the most awaited event of the day, the Wiz-Quiz, hosted by Mr. Hemant Chaudhary. The event began with six teams and had four rounds. IMT secured the 1st position while S.P. Jain took the second position and BITS stood 3rd.

The stage was set in its crowning glory to welcome the most anticipated event of the year- Vaudeville 2009. The cultural event of IMT’s inter-college festival was marked with unbridled excitement that was later echoed by the audience as well. After the initial custom of lighting the lamp, the guests and the audience were held spellbound by an inauguration dance performed by the very talented Amrita. The first competition of the evening aptly titled ‘Lets Tap’ showcased an array of talented performances from students of various colleges. The group dance competition saw participants engaging in different dance styles that were either contemporary (IMT, Dubai), Indian (Mahatma Gandhi University) or street (Skyline college, BITS). A perfect combination of music, synchronization and some gravity-defying steps made the audience beg for more. United Colors of Benetton, one of the proud sponsors of Vaudeville 2009 gave the audience a glimpse of their Fall Winter collection. The clothes modelled by the IMT students themselves came across as extremely fashionable and wearable as expected out of the brand. The next segment of the event saw teams from two colleges, IMT Dubai and S.P. Jain respectively, battling it out in the Mad for Ad competition. This competition tested the teams’ ability to sell a product with conniving skills. If the parodies made up for some rib-tickling moments, then the following competition, ‘U n Me’ was definitely successful in soothing the senses. The duet singing segment presented some of the finest voices that swooned the audience throughout. Also, the official IMT song sung by fellow IMTians received a magnanimous response. The most awaited segment of the cultural event or in other words ‘Show Stopperz’ had participants scorching the ramp in a bid to win the best fashion show. Be it BITS’s ethnic wear round or Heriot-Watt’s all boy show or the host’s theme based Angels and Demons, it all culminated in a mesmerizing event. The audience was also treated with some lip-smacking delights from Pizza World, Puranmal and Royal Kebab, the other sponsors of Vaudeville 2009. Towards the end of the show Dr Abhilasha took the privilege of announcing the results that included the academics events as well. IMT Dubai took the first runner-up spot in Eclectica while they were declared winners in Wiz Quiz, Lets Tap, Show Stopperz thus, being the proud recipients of the Hero’s Trophy! An exhilarating performance by Point of View, a Dubai based rock band signaled the end of the cultural event and Vaudeville 2009. This festival would surely be etched in the minds of many for a long time.

IMT-Dubai is in festive mode with the ongoing preparations for Vaudeville: the second chapter, in association with Nikai Group. Vaudeville, one of its kind, a daylong affair organized by the student body, is scheduled on 23rd Nov’09.

The series of academic events, commencing at 10am, will be adjudged by league of industry experts, Mr. Girish Bapat, Vice President, Nikai Group; Mr. Anup Kumar, Assistant Vice President, Nikai Group; Mr. Abhilash Mathews, Marketing Manager, Nikai Group. Cultural events will start with the lighting of lamp by Dr. Ayoub Kazmi-Executive Director of Dubai International Academic City and Dubai Knowledge Village, Mr. Mahesh Shadadpuri, Director, Nikai Group; Dr. Farhad Rad Serecht, Director, IMT-Dubai and Mr. Masood Al Zarooni, Deira Island Front, Nakheel.

Intercollege Cricket Tournament: Day1

Ajman Cricket Grounds, 16th November, 2009- Even Sachin Tendulkar loses matches. It’s a humbling thought indeed, that great players, and great games have gone down the drain for the best of the best in the sport of Cricket. Something similar happened to the IMT cricket team, when they played their first Cricket match again Skyline University, Sharjah.
The less said about this place, the better. If IMTians did not already get the feel of living in stark desert conditions, this venue was enough to get that feeling out. The grounds were nothing but flattened fields, with a pitch, in the middle of nowhere. With a field and situations like that, the performances of the IMT and Skyline teams, were commendable to say the very least!
Upon winning the toss, the IMT team decided to bat first. Varun Deshwal and Amarjeet Singh, went in as opening batsmen. What an opening that was! The two batsmen made the best of the uneven ground and the fact that the ball wasn’t bouncing that much. Ball after ball, runs were scored, shots hit and Fours and Sixes flowed aplenty. The rest of the team, in the pavilion, cheered their Opening heroes, with escalating spirits, with each ball passing. The shots were spectacular and no less than any professional match being played. Both the players played phenomenally well, and had a partnership of a 100 runs (Deshwal 68, Singh 32).
The rest of the line-up gave their level best as well. Captain Sumit Nagre scored 19 while Rohan Popli scored 13 runs. Overall, an excellent performance by the batsmen brought the score to a total of 163, all out in 20 overs. An extremely good score to defend.
The next innings, turned the game around, in favour of Skyline University. As the afternoon sun climbed at its peak, and the wind levels rose higher, the IMT team went in to bowl. It is hard to pin-point exactly, what went wrong, but apparently something did since the bowling and fielding fell short of expectations. In the 2nd over, Nakul Sharma was able to take 1 wicket (lbw), which was indeed a good beginning to the 2nd innings. However, the bowling side soon became helpless with weaknesses in the fielding. Catches were missed, runs not saved, and boundaries became abundant, quite unfortunate as the team already had an excellent score to defend.
It being a true case of demoralisation, the Skyline team was definitely extremely skilled and fit, and had fabulously high energy levels. Their game was definitely commendable, and it is nothing but a learning experience to lose to such a skilled team and talented players.
The Skyline side made the required score of 164 in 14 overs, losing 2 wickets. At the end of the day, it was a good match, with lots of great moments when sixes went flying across the boundary, when players cheered for others, when the team came together at the beginning and end of the game, and loyalty of each and every IMT player, visible on their disappointed faces upon the end of the match. If anything, this match has taught the team about their short-comings, and they will definitely work on what they lacked today. Their effort must be supported and their determination and skill lauded!
Next match is to be held on 17th November 2009, against Middlesex University.

IMT-D, 5th Nov., 2009- Sister Anna was welcomed by an enthusiastic audience at IMT-D. The workshop, indeed a crucial one for our future managers, allowed them to take a self-perspective journey on becoming leaders of self first before all else. Sister Anna highlighted that when individuals are able to conquer their minds, they invariably become masters of it and meditation helps them in doing so.

“Meditation is the wisdom for being in tune with our inner qualities and to think deeply about several aspects of truth”, Sister Anna quipped.

She emphasised on the fact that as humans, we tend to assimilate a lot of information and our intellect has the power to discriminate this information. By developing this power, we are in turn able to discriminate thoughts that are a hindrance to our aims or higher needs. Thus, success is connected to thoughts. Students were then introduced to a short exercise on meditation that could be practised on a daily basis. After a couple of questions, a motivational song titled “Sunscreen” was presented by the students- a perfect ending to an eye-opening session.

Satyam's resurrection

Satyam: The name of the company has itself become synonymous with one of the biggest financial and business frauds of this generation. When Ramalinga Raju sent out that infamous confession letter, a scandal erupted and consumed one of India’s biggest IT giants into a gaping hole. The company’s assets had been greatly overstated and the financial statements majorly tweaked, by the head of the company.
The question now arises is, what is happening with Satyam: the company? What are the after-effects of such a blow to a company that big? And what steps have been taken to possibly restore the IT company?
On Tuesday, IMT students got the privilege of an interactive session with the highly inspirational and practical person behind one of the biggest turnarounds in recent times. They got a first-hand insight into all the issues and got a chance to discuss the significant answers, with a person directly involved in the aftermath processes, Mr. T.N. Manoharan.
Mr. Manoharan commenced his discourse with some general information about Satyam, like the strength of 53,000 employees, around 650 clients (prior the crisis) and while mentioning the fact that the Satyam brand was one of the most recognised in India and the world, he quipped, “Satyam was like riding the white tiger”. It was followed by the mention of the very famous confession letter by Mr. Raju, due to which company fell into the crisis. Thereafter he started his tenure as a member of the government-appointed Board of Directors, for the revival of the company.
The esteemed guest went on to discuss the first three agenda that the board had to follow. The first task of the new board was to ensure contract continuity. Since the firm had almost no liquidity, the board decided to borrow from external sources like banks and financial institutions to sustain and generate enough funds to keep the business running. Second was to retain the employees, possibly one of the most demanding. For this, the team motivated the work-force and held all lines of communication open and started an e-newsletter, to keep the employees informed about the progress of the firm. Finally, the BOD had to ensure retaining customers. As Mr. Manoharan explained, Satyam’s clients were locked-in for at least a period of 3 months, within which they were able to retain around 90% of them.
The session was extremely interactive with some interesting questions about various facets of the company being asked to the speaker. Dr. Manoharan gave some precious advice while concluding that, “We succeeded because we worked with the noble intention of reviving Satyam. Took no remuneration, worked pro bono. Because, everything is not money. What you learn ethically is what you deserve.” Wise words, which really hit the nail on the head.
All that has been written and spoken about Satyam was nowhere compared to this interactive session which had all the management theories into the context of a real life scenario.

M.E.N.-Second Chapter

IMT-D, 28th Oct., 2009- Marketing was truly on fire at IMT Dubai!

After the grand success of the first chapter on October 14th; the second took place on the 28th of October with new guests and alter subject matter held up by perennial zeal of the IMT student body.
Consumer Behaviour in Different Perspective: very much relevant to the current market scenario in the Gulf region, with changing demographics, dynamic economy and diversity in consumer segments; was the topic of discussion.
Dr.Mohan Agarwal opened the session, introducing the objective behind M.E.N. and the agenda for the evening. He highlighted the importance of consumer behaviour and how IMT as a brand has been able to add value to the Gulf environment. He underlined the differentiating factor of this marketing summit, referring to the presentation prepared by IMT Marketing students on Du, which was commendable.
Presentation was followed by the discourse of Mr. Piyush Mathur, head of AC Nielson Group, one of the biggest giants in Market Research in the region. The esteemed guest spoke about the insights that consumers can provide the marketers and emphasised on the idea that there are opportunities even in these times. Inspirational and thought-provoking words, to say the very least.
The next key note speaker, Mr. Deepak Chandran, Vice President and Head - Cards Portfolio Management, Emirates NBD. He presented an insightful case of marketing for a financial product, a skywards credit card. He talked about how the team was able to design a product to target a niche market, which proved to be acumen in regards with the deft usage of market research for product development, promotion and sales.
The session was concluded with the final speaker, Mr. Vikram Krishna, Head of Retail Loans, Emirates NBD. He asserted the consumer behaviour in the region citing examples from the captivating campaign designed to make people “Borrow Wisely”. The novelty of the concept was highly intriguing and gave insights into the adaptation of organisational perception according to the consumer behaviour.
Overall, the session was extremely engaging and inspirational. The scale and precision of the event was impressive to the students and to the guessed, who voiced their admiration on several occasion. On the whole, this was yet another milepost to the credit of IMT Dubai and team M.E.N.

Image vs. Reality: Incense of Perception in the Service Industry

IMT-D, 18th Oct., 2009- The students of IMT-Dubai have always shown immense enthusiasm in being addressed by corporate minds. And on 18th October 2009, it was no different when IMT's halls were honoured to have Mr. David Carrey, the Director of Facilities Management and his esteemed colleague, Mr. Rohit Dalmia, the Business Development Manager of Facilities Management of the Oasis Investment company LLC. of Al Shirawi Group of Companies. Facilities Management focuses on providing specialized building services for their clients.

The session began with a brief introduction from Mr. Dalmia, who highlighted key aspects of his organisation giving the students an ideal and accurate picture of the real world scenario, human perception and strategies of Al Shirawi.

Mr Carrey, a veteran of the Royal Navy , having years of experience in the service and hospitality industry, then took the stage leaving an enthralled audience hanging to his every word. He questioned everyone's reality and perception. He then related it to the his current area of expertise, the service industry. He emphasized the need for adding value to a service or a product and selling it to a potential employee as well as a client. The need to invent, re-invent is necessary, he said, to increase profitability and give clients what they want. He repeatedly said it was of utmost importance to respect one's employees no matter their rank, treat them with the highest regard, motivate them, for they form the foundation of an organization.

His presentation also consisted of a series of questions of varying subjects yet related to each other, involving all students to think, jot down answers and participate.

The students of IMT have benefited from this immensely. Mr. Carrey has been able to provide an opportunity for them to see the world a bit differently and make a huge difference.

Diwali Mela...!!

IMT-D, 16th Oct, 2009- For people living outside their country, small events connecting them with their homeland can touch hearts. Day-to-day life away from home is hard enough, but when it comes to being away from home on festivals, homesickness reaches new levels altogether.
At IMT Dubai, there is a clear understanding of these sentiments, and every effort is made to make the students feel as much at home as possible. The Diwali Event organised by the ECAC and the Sports Committee was one such attempt that reminded IMT students that they are a part of a large family, the IMT family!
Preparations started with gusto in the early afternoon of 16th October, as people started setting up their stalls for the Diwali Mela. Some innovative ideas, some investment and lots of profit! People set up different kinds of stalls, to attract people and get a chance to early revenue.
Soon enough, people starting filing into the courtyard to have fun at the stalls. From simple card and luck games, to refreshments, from Diwali sweets to interesting games, from a professional Mehendi-wali to Basketball, there was a medley of attractions, which generated a lot of interest among students!
At 7 pm, the IMT students were requested to join the ECAC members and the faculty into the recreation room, for Lakshmi Pooja and Aarti. Once inside, it felt no less than being in a mandir. With the murti of Goddess Lakshmi residing in the room, the feel was spiritual and pure. Everyone assembled at the front of the room, where Dr.Abhilasha lit the Diwali diya. The room then reverberated with the tune of Jai Laxmi Ramana, with everyone singing along the aarti. After the pooja, the thaali was circulated around the room, and bhog halwa distributed. It truly felt like being in a mandir with family! The togetherness and purety of the festival bounced of the walls and people’s faces radiated with smiles. Everyone wished each other a happy diwali, hugged friends and shook hands. Special Moments…
Following the successful stalls came an equally engaging Cultural Event, where IMT students got a chance to present their talents in front of everyone. The hosts of the event, Pranay Sachdev and Neha Mathur, kept the event pepped up and conversationalist.
There were many fantastic performances by the students, but the ones that really stood out were the Solo Dance by Dimpy Kachhia and the Dance by Rohan Popli and Group. Both really took one’s breath away! Apart from these performances, the finale of the evening, The Indo-Western Fashion Show, choreographed by Apeksha Mehta and Gloria D’Souza, made everyone sit up and applaud in amazement! The first ever fashion show of IMT was a huge success!
After the Cultural Event, the stalls were opened again for people to enjoy. The night ended with shouts of joy and laughter echoing through the campus. The spirit of the Diwali burnt long and strong, and IMT celebrated its 2nd Diwali.

Marketing on Fire...!!

IMT-D, 14th Oct, 2009- IMT’s brand’s growth is inevitable by the standard of events and corporate recognition that the college gets each year. With the attempt of bringing in real world corporates into our campus, and having them share some of their precious knowledge and experiences with us, IMT organised Marketing Excellence Network. The event was organised under the leadership of Dr. Mohan Agarwal, whose guidance and ideas made the event a success.
The event took a lot of meticulous planning and organisation, and students of the IMT played a major part in it. A committee of sorts was formed, and work was assigned in a very detailed manner to all the volunteers. Corporates were contacted and invites and notices sent out, presentations made, neighbouring colleges were informed, grand scale promotions done, and much more. All in a matter of a week. So credit goes to all the people behind this event. IMT students enthusiastically arrived to the event and the room looked impressive and well set-up.
The event rolled, with the speakers arriving. The main speakers were Mr. Nidal Abou Zaki, Managing Director, Orient Planet PR and Marketing, Mr Brajesh Bajpayi, Head MENA Region – Marico Industries, U.A.E and Mr Ricky Husaini, Chief Investment Officer, DARE, U.A.E.
Each speaker talked about their field of expertise, their experience in the company they work for, and a roomful of students clung on to each word spoken. Each one of them spoke out of true experience, gave real-time examples, spoke about theory and supported with very interesting practises. For students of Management, their talks were enlightening and appealing. The expertise that was discussed was priceless and the advise given sound. A phrase that stood out in the entire seminar was, “ fail early, fail cheap”, an advice given by Mr. Bajpaye. Simple words that teach so much. Another advice that really haunted the listeners was given by Mr.Ricky Husaini, who very intensely asked the room, “when was the last time you spent half a day with yourself, for yourself?” That simple question got everyone introspecting. His advice that followed was that, each one of us should spend at least half a day with ourselves, thinking about ourselves, to be really able to decide what we want in life, where we want to be in our lives, how we want to proceed, what we want to do. Wise words, special moment.
The Seminar came to a close with an interesting question answer session. Students took initiative in asking field-related questions to the speakers, who very willingly obliged and answered each question clearly. On behalf of all the students, a big thank you is in order for these people, who spared their time and expertise with so much grace and showed so much enthusiasm for the event. Without their presence, this event would have been totally incomplete!
People at IMT-D are looking forward to keeping up this tradition of MEN and plan to follow through with it every year.

Guest Lecture- Marketing Research...!!

IMT-D, 14th Oct., 2009- It was a pleasure to sit in Hall 6-7 and listen to what our guest speaker, Mr. Aditya Gokhale (Director, Business Intelligence & M.R., DU) had to say. He connected with the audience almost instantaneously. His examples on Marketing research were as candid as they could be. There was not a single point in time during the guest lecture when he did not make everyone smile or laugh, because he had them all in splits. Hailing from Mumbai, his attitude towards the audience was very straightforward and casual. Using lingos that are popular among today’s youngsters, he grabbed the attention from the very first minute of his lecture.
He did not speak much about DU, although most of the students expected him to enumerate instances when DU used Marketing research extensively. He, however, spoke on Marketing research as a subject topic-but deviated quite often to speak of personal experiences in the field of Marketing research, not necessarily those from his experiences at DU. He spoke of the various syndromes that marketers have, and how all future marketing aspirants should steer clear from them. He also stressed on improving the Return on investment in the field of Marketing Research. In one his main points he stated that Marketing research should be objective, and must not even include anything that is indirectly relevant to the research study. His points on Marketing research were unmistakable and there were no doubts in anyone’s minds regarding the subject topic.
All in all, it was quite an interactive and interesting session. IMT hopes to have him again in the future for more insight into the world of marketing research.

FOB Final Event- Mens Cricket...!!

IMT-D, 13th Oct., 2009- After a week of sports, fun, cheering and high spirits, we finally came to an exhilarating end of The “Fresh of the Boat” Sports Week. The final cricket match between the Juniors and the Seniors went on to a riveting finale, with hearts almost jumping out of their bodies and the pulse racing to an overwhelming pace.
Even before the match started, people starting filing in, standing on the sidelines and observing the teams warm up and practice. There was a general excitement in the air, this being the final event of the weeklong program. The boundaries were made, the usual preparations for the speakers and mikes done, and finally, the big golden trophy was brought out, to be handed over to the winners of the tournament. The Sports Committee was as vibrant and organised as ever, taking care of every little detail to make the event go smoothly. Once again, a huge pat on their back, and a big feather in their cap!
The match started at around 4 pm, on a fairly cool afternoon (by Dubai standards). The Junior team, in their clean whites and the Senior team with their mean black t-shirts lined up in the parking lot/cricket field. The teams were led by Anuj Sharma (seniors) and Rahul Singh (juniors). Rahul won the toss and chose to bowl first.
Although all players were highly lauded for their skill and determination during the game, there were some players and some moments, which stood out. From the Senior side, a player worth mentioning is Deepak Nagar, who put the other side into some serious trouble with his powerful shots and skilful batting. Similarly, from the Junior side, Puneet Soni and Rizwan Akhtar added a lot of zeal and enthusiasm to the game. On the bowling side, Saurabh Aggarwal from the seniors and Arjun Rajeskaran from the Junior side performed exceptionally well.
After a nerve wracking game and a nail-biting, explosive ending, the scores were: Seniors 75, Juniors 73/9. The match went on to the last ball, with 4 runs needed out of 1 ball. The intensity could be seen on the faces of everyone standing on the sidelines, waiting for that last ball to determine what team would win. Finally, the ball was played and the Seniors walked away with the victory. An excited throb of people ran on to the field, the taste of achievement and glee visible on their faces.

The teams were once again lined up near the dais. Dr. Abhilasha and Dr. Seth spoke some encouraging and inspirational words, encouraging the students to take part in more activities like this and play an active role in events at IMT. They congratulated the Sports Committee and the ECAC for their efforts and success of the FOB tournament, and lauded all the teams and players who participated in the events.
Thus…with the shiny golden trophy presented to The Seniors, the FOB came to a close, only till next year, with new teams, new excitement and whole new energy and a will to be better!

Guest Lecture -Retail Management

IMT-D, 11th Oct., 2009- IMT Dubai was graced with the esteemed presence of Mrs. Nidhi Bansal. She currently holds the position of Key Retail Manager at Comtel, the Business Representative of Sony Ericsson in the Middle- East.

She addressed students, yesterday, about the vastly intriguing field of Retail Management, engrossing them into a highly interactive discussion on retailing and making the right strategic decisions.

She emphasized the importance of the Customer and adding value to the services and products they require in order to retain them. She incorporated real examples of both extraordinary corporate successes and colossal failures to highlight the importance of making the right decisions at the right time. This will ensure survival and sustainability to the company, thereby ensuring distributors that a retail chain has the capacity to cater their mutual needs.

The key to becoming the top retailer, she said, is to ensure the customers receive maximum value for the goods and services they buy through innovation and competition. Once a company achieve the distinction of a top brand in the eyes of the customer, it is easy for the company to ensure a mutually beneficial relationship with the customers.

Last but not the least, the need for cost control was also pointed out by her, for which she said: “One Dirham earned is One Dirham saved". Cost control ensures quality goods for a reduced price which is attractive to consumers, thereby increasing profitability of the retailer.

Cricket Match: Faculty vs Students

IMT-D, 11th Oct., 2009- The highly anticipated cricket match played between the faculty and students was held today at the IMT ground. It kick started with the faculty team winning the toss and opting to bat. The opening batsman of the team, Mr.Gyan, made a mark on the team's innings with a series of impressive sixes and fours. His commendable 39 runs made him the highest team scorer as well. After a tough ride, the students’ team restricted the faculty’s innings to 101 runs for 5 wickets. The overall vibe emanated by our very own audience was positive and brimming with enthusiasm. Meanwhile, the students’ team took up the challenge with gusto, the highest scoring batsman being Rohan who scored an appreciable 33 runs. Eventually, their innings was settled to 78 runs for 4 wickets but, not so without a fight! Kudos to the faculty team for an eventful evening!

FOB-Day 3...!!

IMT-D, 10th Oct, 2009- On the Day 3 of FOB, the cricket field started to get really crowded with the spectators. The first match began by 4pm. IMT witnessed its 3rd cricket match, which was between the teams lead by Anuj Sharma and Anuj Parwal. It was kind of a one sided contest; ANUJ PARWAL's team won the toss & chose to bat first and posted a target of 65 runs in front of their opponents. The rival team easily achieved it in less than five overs, led by brilliant batting of Mr. Deepak Nagar who played an unbeatable knock with some huge shots to the fence. Spectators were heard talking about his performance after the match.

The most awaited event of the whole FOB happened yesterday. Yes, no prizes for guessing, here we are talking about FRENCH Cricket for Girls. The match was between the teams of 2009 fall and 2008 batches. IMT witnessed a captivating match with a flurry of sixes from both sides. 2009 batch team chose to bat first and performed incredibly by posting a modest target of 65 runs on the score board for their senior counterpart, but a phenomenal batting display by Ms. NIKUNJ from the 2008 batch's team was witnessed by the audience, who slammed 4 sixes in an over; a record in IMT History OF Cricket in both men and women cricket. The 2008 batch team easily achieved the set target and won the first ever French cricket in IMT.

Now everyone is waiting anxiously for the final match, scheduled tomorrow: dated 11.10.09, time-4:00pm; which will decide the winner of the mens cricket of 2009.

LAN PARTY (Inter College Counter-Strike Tournament).

IMT-Dubai, 9th -10th Oct, 2009- IMT saw the first of its kind, two days inter-college gaming competition. Hall No.6 in the Academic Block buzzed with activity, when teams from various colleges around IMT took active part in Counter-strike. Students flocked into IMT from Manipal, Mahatma Gandhi University, SP Jain and BITS; everyone eager to participate in the unique event!
The Counter-strike event was a joint venture of Sports Committee and ECAC, strongly supported by IT Committee, and of course, carefully covered by the Media Committee. The promotions for the event were on a fairly large scale, and they surely succeeded in generating the crowd and the reaction that such an event required. The work that must have gone through to make the event look so professional is remarkable!
The competitions ran in flow, with people taking relatively little time to setup their equipment before the matches. The games generated a lot of interest, specially the ones with results like 16-0, and there were many of those! Students came up with pretty creative names for their teams; namely K155, IMT Clan, which added to the amusement of the event.

Day One

Eight matches were held on the first day, with each team comprising of 5 members. The excitement levels reached the ceiling and players got involved in their respective games.
The game itself involves terrorists and counter terrorists whose mission is to get by each other without losing their lives. The graphics of the game are downright fascinating, and even the untrained eye finds them impressive. The game is all about strategy and teamwork, which most teams understood very well, and followed diligently. So, not only was it a fun experience, as an MBA school, this simple gaming activity taught the basic lessons of organization, teamwork, appropriate strategy, plan of action and implementing a strategic plan.
Time elapsed, and teams got eliminated but the energy levels of the gamers just kept escalating.

Day Two

Day 2 began with a lot of enthusiasm amongst the teams and the spectators. As most of the students went for an early brunch so as not to miss even the slightest of the match. The first semi-final began at 2pm between K155 & CN. , Which was a success for the CN team and was followed by a match between PB & IMT Clan where the IMT Clan made us proud. Despite being a new team IMT Clan performed really well & gave a tough time to all its competitors. The announcement of results for the semi-finals was no less than a nerve racking situation for all the four teams. The semi-finals were followed by the grand finale (the final Match) which began in full throttle at 4pm. The whole campus was so excited that everyone was rushing to cheer their hommies (IMT Clan) which showed up on the seating space in the room the whole place got packed with students cheering & screaming for their team & pushing them to perform better. The teams had decided that who so ever performs best in the three maps & scores well wins the title. K155 (BITS’ team) had been the best performing team so far and had beaten almost everyone by 16-0 and IMT Clan was the only team to stand against them and score 16-13 in their first match. This was a really tight game; all the spectators had crossed their fingers and were excited about the whole match. The fight was neck to neck, and it was very difficult to say which team will walk out of the arena as a winning, finally K155 won after taking a really tough fight from IMT Clan.

The ECAC, Sports and IT Committee Members were constantly present, to organize and help with the matches. Even at the end of the event, they remained focused and worked conjointly which lead to a spectacular show. So, a hearty applause goes to them for pulling off this grand event for IMT!

Cricket Tournament

IMT-Dubai, Oct. 9, 2009- Fresh off the Boat, the four day sports event (8th -11th October) organised at the IMT campus by Sports Committee commenced its second day of activities with India's favourite pastime: CRICKET!!

At 6:00 am, players, enthusiasts and supporters all gathered to watch match one (Juniors Vs Juniors) on the agenda while matches two and three (seniors Vs Seniors) were played in the afternoon after the Inter-College Counter Strike Tournament.
All the three matches were played to shortlist finalists for the final match of the tournament (juniors v/s seniors), scheduled to be played on 11th October’09: final day of the event.

The matches were played with great vigour and to loud cheers. However, the winning teams were sailing ahead by miles.

The winning Juniors' team lead by Rahul Singh of the September ’09 batch scored 99 runs while the Seniors' team lead by Rohan Popli scored 91 runs. All this is promising to lead to one extraordinary Finals' match which might become the crown jewel of the Fresh off the Boat Sports Tournament.

Fresh Off the Boat...Day 1!!

Soccer

IMT-D, 8th Oct., 2009- The “Freshers” witnessed IMT Dubai’s first organised sporting event. A football match was held, between the Seniors and the Juniors, at the grounds of the campus, first of the many events planned for Sports Week at IMT. Music blared, energy vibrated throughout the campus and the plush green grass invited the players to perform their very best. The event was much Much more than just a soccer game, it was a foundation for the next two years of bonding and team spirit.

Students at IMT started pouring into the courtyard/lawn, when music began reverberating through the campus at around 4 pm. The energy was almost tangible, running through people’s blood and smiles. Prior to that, the members of the Sports Committee, who were in charge of organising this event, worked the entire afternoon to make the necessary preparations for the match. Observers noticed their enthusiasm, organisation and heed for detail. Everything down to the last bottle of water was taken care of. Tables and chairs were set up, speakers were put all around the field to give a great sound effect and a huge gold trophy resurfaced to be presented to the winning team. So, a big kudos and applaud is in order for the Sports Committee for their impeccable work!

The event started right on time with the opening speech by Dr. Mohan Agarwal, who in his usual style emphasized on the implications of these sporting events in a business school. His words were encouraging as always. Then, the two teams lined up in the center of the field and through the speakers came seeping out the Indian National Anthem. That moment, of togetherness, of passion, of an inexplicable racing of the heartbeat, of goose bumps, was magical to say the very least. Those 2 minutes of pure serenity would be ingrained in the memory of every person present at that moment for many years to come.

Then the game commenced and the racing heartbeats broke records as the adrenaline levels rose to their peaks, not only for the players, but also the crowd, which gathered to cheer for the players. Both 2008 and 2009 batches cheered their respective teams, and the atmosphere was no different from attending a Manchester United match in the stadium! While the players sped across the field, playing like pros, people stood on the sidelines and cheered the players on. The energy of all the players is commendable. Their spirit and determination was truly impressive and people took pleasure in cheering both the teams on!

The 2008 batch walked away with the cup, at the end of the game, but after a game this exhilarating it mattered more how it was played, than who won. Having said that, a hearty congratulations and pat on the back goes to the all the 2008 batch team members! A special mention must be given to their spirit and attitude towards the 2009 fall batch during and after the game. The match ended on a friendly note, and the spirit of the sport was kept alive!

The first sporting event of the academic year 2009-2010, was undoubtedly a huge success! IMT students are now extremely charged up and waiting with bated breath for the upcoming events of Sports Week!

Public Speaking Competition

IMT-D, 7th Oct., 2009- IMT’s Corporate Community organised a simulation public speaking event, with the topic of “Peak Oil Era”, discussing whether the worldwide oil reserves are coming to an end. The idea of the event was to make people speak at official business events and conferences, promote public speaking and to prepare the students for participating in business events and conferences. There were some hiccups in the organisation, but the idea and intention were noble.
Around 4 pm, when the speakers and judges arrived, the event started rolling. There was a brief introduction given by a member of the Corporate Committee, and the speakers were called on the floor. The speakers were Aditya Kumar, Gaurav Tyagi, Amandeep Singh Kohli and Subhanshu Garg, all from the 2008 batch. Their preparation and presentation was high in standard and flow. The research and data collected was extensive and the facts presented intriguing. Every one of them presented their opinion with clarity and was confident in the way he conducted the speeches. Overall performance of the speakers was impressive, to say the very least. Their presentations are available with the Media Committee.
The topic chosen, The Peak Oil Era, was interesting and relevant in terms of content. People chose to argue different sides of the oil debate. Interesting facts came up, like the one that it’ll be another 140 years before the world runs out of Oil reserves. A contradicting fact, USA Today reported that we only have 14 years of reserves. Interesting insight into Oil as an energy source. The speakers presented clear sited facts and figures regarding the oil reserves in different countries, discussed consumer behaviour in the industry, discussed the reasons and speculations behind the threat of diminishing oil reserves and briefly provided conclusions about various factors affecting these results.
Overall, the small event served the purpose of giving the speakers a chance to practise speaking on such business related and current issues, experience a business competition scenario and get the opportunity to work on an important business issue. IMT and the Corporate Committee are planning to host many more such events in the near future, and we hope for them to be successes.

CONSUMER COMPLICITY-COUNTERFEIT GOODS

IMT, Dubai-October 6, 2009- Guest Lecture aimed at discussing consumer complicity with counterfeit goods and the main categories of counterfeiting.
Dr. Peggy Chaudhary, assistant professor-Department of Management and Operations, at Villanova University outlined the approach of the research that was done to find valid data in both the categories, using which a model for complicity was made. Her contention was that the complicity model, which consists of personal and environmental factors, offers a much clearer direction against counterfeiting.
Traditional counterfeiting deals with virtual and physical goods like software, movies, books etc.; non-traditional on the other hand deals with consumer goods like pharmaceutical drugs, foods and beverages etc. She justified the necessity for a clear understanding of the model by mentioning that a large number of world’s population actively deals with counterfeit goods like watches, clothes, software, music etc.
Dr. Chaudhary emphasized on personal and environmental factors which help in giving a clear definition of complicity once they are determined by new age market research methods equipped with new ideas and techniques. She also highlighted the major ineffectual anti-counterfeiting campaigns over the years, for which hedonic shopping experiences, blog rebuttals, futile social and de-marketing actions were the prominent reasons.
She acknowledged models of Walt Disney for education of the consumer, Pfizer for evoking a sense of fear while using non-traditional counterfeit product, 3D holograms used for the empowerment of the consumer, and new innovative techniques such as E-Pedigree; as one of the most successful ideas and campaigns.
She concluded in the context of her book that despite improved technologies and effective campaigns counterfeiting can’t be abolished completely. Hence, a realistic picture of counterfeiting business would help in attaining a managerial perspective of the subject matter.

Frehsers Bash@Keva

Keva Lounge, Dubai-5th Oct., 2009- Keva Lounge put its regular lights out, switched its disco lights on, and was flooded with juniors and seniors of IMT Dubai, living up the party scene of the city. Thus started a night of pure fun, and frolic. The dance floor buzzed with movement, the sofas buzzed with conversations and the lawns outside buzzed…in the ears of the people who came out from the extremely loud music.
The 2008 batch took the initiative in organising an “unofficial” Freshers’ Bash, and took care of just about everything that makes a party come to life. The batch of 2009 fall was waiting eagerly for this first real night-out as a big group in Dubai city, and 2008 batch made that possible. The efforts that went into organising the event will only be appreciated and lauded. The ECAC committee played a major role in gathering people, finding the right place (bullseye!) and negotiating a good deal with the club (phew!).
Keva Lounge is a relaxed hangout spot for the first part of the evening, with plush redness bathing it with the air of class and sophistication. The bar sprawls across half the place, and prompt and efficient bartenders fix some wonderful cocktails and pour some neat drinks. As the night progresses, the place converts into a disco club, with the dance floor in the middle of the place livened up with danceable Desi beats, the DJ making a real party out of our night out. At regular intervals the dance floor was consumed with white smoke, which made the experience of dancing in the darkness even more mystical. Overall, a good choice for a place to have the party!
Upon speaking with the batch of 2009, it is evident that they enjoyed the frolicking bash completely and totally! The dancing, the drinks and the people! The fact that the place was filled with only people from our college was indeed a good thing. There were familiar faces and a comfort level, which is often hard to get in clubs. So, the familiarity of the situation made it seem like having a club night at a friend’s house!
So, IMT’s students partied the night away, had some entertaining conversations and mainly cut the final ice that existed somewhere between the juniors and the seniors. Now that the beginning has been so exhilarating, we are now looking forward to the next two years of the same! This party has revived the dimming energy and set the path for more enthusiasm for the future!

Fresher's Beat...!!

IMT-D, 2^nd Oct, 2009- Proud Indian hearts beat in unison to rhythm of glory, freedom and sacrifice on the auspicious day of 2nd October. But the IMTians had it better.

Not only did they get to honour the country, Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shashtri, but they revelled in the light of the first official fresher's party. September '09 batch became the first batch in the history of IMT to be welcomed into her grounds with such an extraordinary enthusiasm.

The senior batches worked hard at organizing and activating participation from all students alike. Despite slight technical difficulties, they succeeded in pulling off a night to be etched into memories for good. Enthusiastic participation from the student community resulted in wide, wild, imaginative and creative participation of various solo and group talents. There was music (special thanks to DJ Ron for his amazing and fresh tracks), dance, culture, laughter and appreciation in the air. Encore performance were requested by many an eager crowd.

The night was graced with the presence of various faculty members including the Dean, Dr. Arvind Seth, who inspired the students with his encouraging words and Dr. Abhilasha Singh, under whose guidance such an amazing feat was brought to victory. They along with other faculty members formed the panel that judged the participants of Mr. and Ms. Fresher. Shivang Kapoor and Apeksha Mehta were rightly awarded the titles for their outstanding performance while Gloria D'souza and Pranay Sachdev received distinction for their attention - grabbing talent in the form of the Best Female and Best Male Performer respectively.

The atmosphere was charged with interminable drive, fuelled on by Dr. Agarwal's singing talent stimulating everyone else to dance and sing as the event closed with Dr. Abhilasha's vote of thanks.

All in all, IMTians create sagas worth of chronicles to inspire current and future IMTians and to be role models to everyone else.

All the seniors, juniors and the faculty who sacrificed their valuable time and energy to make this night an immense success for everyone; are worth an accolade, who were unified in their opinion of great organization, participation and delectable food.
